AI in the boardroom: assistance, not authority

AI can transform how boards and executives receive intelligence — provided the accountability for decisions never moves.

Merer Intelligence

The right role for AI

AI is very good at retrieving information, connecting evidence, surfacing patterns and drafting analysis. It is not accountable, and it cannot be.

The organisations that benefit most from AI in governance are those that are precise about this boundary: AI prepares intelligence; people make and own decisions.

Practical guardrails

  • Material outputs require human approval before they are relied upon.
  • Every AI-supported finding is traceable to its underlying evidence.
  • Fact and inference are clearly distinguished in what decision-makers see.
  • Information stays scoped to the organisation it belongs to.

Why this matters now

Boards are already receiving AI-assisted material, whether or not it is labelled as such. Building explicit guardrails is now part of governance itself.
